Crossy Road

by Hipster Whale
Crossy Road is an arcade game with one mission: get the chicken across the road. Collect coins and dodge oncoming traffic, trains and rivers as you move through a level that gets faster and crazier the longer you survive.

Crossy Road is a skill game where you guide a chicken across busy roads, train tracks and rivers while trying to survive as long as possible.

Every time you move, you're pushed into new dangers. Move too slowly and the oncoming traffic will flatten you. Move too fast and you will run right into harm's way.

The cute blocky graphics and tricky roads have made Crossy Road a GameHub favorite, with over 1.7 million player upvotes.

How Crossy Road works

In this single-player game, every hop moves your character one row forward and adds one point to your score. The goal is to survive as long as possible while crossing an endless path of roads, rivers and moving dangers.

Traffic lanes usually move in 1 direction at a time. Once you recognise the pattern of slow and fast lanes, you can plan 2 or 3 hops ahead.

As your run continues, the game gets harder and harder. Traffic moves faster, safe gaps between cars and trucks become smaller and rivers force you to jump quicker between moving logs.

The screen will follow you as you play. If you wait too long, the screen moves forward and forces your character into danger.

Obstacles you must survive

Crossy Road mixes 4 different dangers together on every run.

  • Traffic: Cars, taxis and trucks move at different speeds across the road. Some lanes are slow while others move fast. Spot the gap between cars before you move.
  • Trains: Train tracks include warning lights and a bell sound before the train arrives. React quickly once the signal appears or risk being flattened.
  • Rivers: Rivers cannot be crossed directly. Instead you must jump across floating logs before they drift away.
  • The eagle: Standing still too long is dangerous. If you hesitate for too long, the camera keeps moving and an eagle will swoop down, grab you and end the run.

Crossy Road worlds

Crossy Road includes 3 different worlds that change the obstacles you encounter.

  • Original: Classic roads filled with cars, trucks and trains.
  • Space: Meteors and asteroids replace traffic while UFOs hunt players who wait too long.
  • Dinosaurs: Dinosaurs and crocodiles appear as the obstacles. The eagle is replaced by a Pterodactyl.

Crossy Road characters

Crossy Road has 15 characters to unlock, ranging from the default chicken to animals, dinosaurs and robots. Characters cost 100 coins.

Each world includes 5 characters. You always start with the chicken, which appears in a different themed outfit in each world.

  • Original: Chicken, Rusty Robot, Lucky Cat, Mallard and Swift Snail
  • Space: Space Chicken, Astronaut, Astronomer, Rover and Space Dog
  • Dinosaurs: Dinosaur Chicken, Dilophosaurus, Parasaurolophus, Stegosaurus and T-Rex

Tips to improve your Crossy Road score

Most runs in Crossy Road will end before you reach 100 points. These 5 simple tips help you avoid the mistakes most players make.

  • Watch the full lane before hopping: Look at how fast each car moves before hopping forward. Slow lanes let you hop without waiting. Fast lanes need to be timed perfectly to avoid being knocked down.
  • Move sideways to stay safe: When the lane ahead has no gap, step left or right into a safer row while you wait. Standing still risks the eagle.
  • Ride logs to the middle, not the edge: Logs drift off screen in both directions. Jump on near the middle and move to the next log before it carries you out of bounds.
  • React to the bell immediately: Train tracks give one short warning sound before the train arrives. If you wait on the tracks after the bell rings, the train will hit you.
  • Collect coins only when it is safe: Coins appear in the path, but chasing one into a fast lane is one of the easiest ways to lose a long run.

About Crossy Road

Crossy Road was created by Australian studio Hipster Whale and released in 2014, reaching 50 million downloads within its first few months on mobile.

The idea for the game was inspired by the classic joke "Why did the chicken cross the road?"

The game uses colourful voxel graphics where characters and vehicles are built from block-like shapes, giving Crossy Road its playful toy-like look.

The Crossy Road app is available to download on both iOS and Android.
